LAKEWOOD–Lakewood Police on Friday evening apprehended a mentally unstable and armed man following an hour-long standoff, Police tell TLS.
At about 7:25 PM on Friday evening, police received a call about a mentally unstable father who had barricaded himself in an apartment at the Crossroads Apartment complex on Kennedy Boulevard.
Upon arrival, police discovered that the man had a gun, and that a 12 year old autistic sister of the man was in the apartment with him – though she was not being held against her will, police say.
Police swarmed the area and secured the perimeter and building, Detective Captain Paul Daly tells TLS.
After some time, the man, armed with an illegal handgun, climbed out of his apartment window and made his way to the roof of the building, Daly says.
About an hour after the incident began, police used a ladder to gain access to the roof and apprehended the man without incident. He was cuffed and taken into custody.
Lakewood SRT Team was called in, but were not needed, police say.
The suspect, who had outstanding warrants, was charged with Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes, Heroin Possession, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and with Domestic Violence Harassment, Daly says.
He was transported to the Ocean County jail and is being held in lieu of $125,000 bail, Daly said. TL
