BRICK–Mrs. Cathy Popp and Mrs. Kathy Keough first grade teachers at Drum Point Elementary School have been honored as the recipients of Monmouth University’s Mayor’s Book Club. This program selected a group of educators in New Jersey to support reading achievement.
Six New Jersey schools from Middlesex, Monmouth, and Ocean Counties have been honored to join forces with mayors from their communities and the Monmouth University School of Education to promote engagement, interest, and reading and writing for first grade students.
The students participating in the program will read a total of eight books over a four-month period and will have the opportunity to be read to by special guest readers, including their own mayor. Each student who participates will receive a book at the conclusion of the program.
In addition, the participating first grades in each school that have read at least 1,000 books will be given $1,000 to be spent on books for their first-grade classroom libraries. On February 21, 2013 Drum Point held a kickoff event where the Mayor and ambassadors from Monmouth University read books to our children.
