TOMS RIVER-On Saturday night, June 23rd, Toms River police responded to a pedestrian accident in the eastbound lanes of Route 37 at the entrance to the Mathis Bridge, heading towards Seaside Heights/Park. The accident happened at approximately 10:45 pm.
Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said a pedestrian involved in the accident has been pronounced dead. There is only one lane of traffic eastbound on Route 37 as police are investigating this accident along with the Ocean County Prosecutors Office and the Ocean County Sheriff’s department.
“This is the fifth fatal accident and the sixth death this year all of which have occurred on Route 37,” Mastronardy said. ”This is the third pedestrian fatal pedestrian accident in the Township this year. One lane of traffic eastbound use caution. New Jersey DOT response team is assisting with traffic control.”
