Point Pleasant–The deployment of a 47 foot sculpture of a horseshoe crab constructed from concrete went horribly wrong and was captured by video by a YouTube user this week. While being lowered into the Atlantic Ocean into the man made Axel Carlson Reef off the coast of Mantaloking, a cable snapped, sending the would-be Guiness Book entry crashing to the sea floor.

The sculpture, created by scuba instructor and marine biologist Chris Wojcik, was to provide habitat for more than 150 species of marine life, a fishing ground for anglers and a unique area for scuba divers to explore. The immense structure, would have been recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest underwater sculpture in the world.

Instead, according to a sonar survey of the sea floor, the sculpture appears to be in pieces. It’s not a complete loss, because those fragments are still expected to make a suitable habitat for various marine life.

After a fire ripped through the condominium complex at Laurel Chase, in Toms River, the remaining damaged structures were demolished for public safety reasons.

Earlier today, multiple fire departments in Ocean County responded to the working structure fire which had engulfed two units. In that fire, which started on the deck in the rear of one of the units, firefighters rescued a cat and two firefighters were treated for injuries at Community Medical Center. The fire raged for 30 minutes before the blaze was under control.

All Toms River Fire Companies responded to the fire including Toms River Fire Company 1 and 2 along with Silverton Fire Company, Pleasant Plains Fire Company, East Dover Fire Company, and Ocean Beach. Companies from other towns who responded were Manchester, Ridgeway, Lakewood, Beachwood, Island Heights, Brick and Seaside Heights.

The fire is being investigated by Detective James Magovern and the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention.

By Phil Stilton

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is on the campaign trail — and part of his campaign team’s strategy is to garner the support of the Jewish community both at home and abroad. Another part of Romney’s campaign strategy appears to be keeping those fundraisers in the Orthodox Jewish community hidden from the public.

On July 28th, while in Israel, Romney’s camp, according to the Associated Press pool story, attempted to bar reporters from attending a fundraiser that raised $10,000,000 in Israel that Monday morning.

No reason was given by the campaign for the change in policy for that fundraiser, other than an aide told reporters that the event was “closed press”.

The AP report went on, “Reporters have been allowed to attend and report on Mitt Romney’s fundraisers since May, when the campaign lifted its restrictions on access and said fundraisers held in public venues such as hotels would be open to a small group of press. They have never allowed cameras inside to document the events.”

Later, Romney’s campaign back tracked that decision after receiving complaints from the media pool. The campaign, according to the AP, allowed one reporter into the fundraiser to cover the event. No photos were allowed, which has been the norm for the presidential candidate under scrutiny from his opponents about his transparency.

Fast forward slightly over one week later, where on August 8th, Romney visited Lakewood, New Jersey, home to one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities in America. It was here that Romney pulled in another $1.5 million for his campaign in a community that hosts one of the world’s largest Yeshivas.

Once again, the media was barred from the event, another departure from standard protocol of allowing the press pool into campaign events in public facilities. Since May the press has been barred from two Romney fundraisers. Both times, they were with the Orthodox Jewish community.

Residents of Lakewood, NJ’s Orthodox Jewish Community attend the $1,000 per ticket fund raiser for Mitt Romney at The Lake Terrace.

To assist in Romney’s shroud of secrecy in Lakewood, the management of Lake Terrace, the hall in which the event was held, ordered Lakewood Police to remove all media from the premises, a claim Romney campaign manager Rick Gorka claims did not come from the campaign. Lakewood Township police officers swept through the parking lot asking anyone with a camera if they were associated with the media. Anyone who answered ‘yes’ was escorted from the property to a location nearly a football field’s length away from the facility’s property. At one point, a police officer ordered an Asbury Park Press film crew even further away.

Romney’s press secretary, New Jersey resident Rick Gorka claimed it wasn’t them. ”What the facility did has nothing to do with us,” Gorka said in a phone interview Saturday morning, shortly after the campaign announced Paul Ryan as Romney’s running mate.

It wasn’t just local news media who got the boot at that event. According toYahoo! News reporter Holly Bailey, the pool was not permitted inside the fundraiser either. In her report, she claimed, “Your pool is now holding in a room ahead of Romney’s remarks at the private fundraiser, set to begin in about one hour. Per spokesman Rick Gorka, Romney is going to pose for photos with the wedding party, but the campaign will not allow the pool to witness this event.”

Gorka says Bailey’s report is incorrect. Gorka would not respond to our questions regarding the exclusion of local media at the event, saying just that it was for pool only, claiming AP pool reporter Holly Bailey’s report was inaccurate. “Holly Bailey was inside and in attendance. I’m not going to rehash this,” Gorka said. ”I have a busy day. It was open to the press pool.”

While Gorka was less than enthused to discuss this matter hours after his boss announced Ryan as Romney’s running mate, he maintained his composure slightly more then he in the conversation from two weeks ago when he told reporters to “Kiss my @$$”. It was a comment made by Gorka after telling the pool to have some respect at Grób Nieznanego Żołnierza, in Warsaw, Poland’s version of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The really great news today is the ‘Door Mat’– a 7 pound fluke that was just weighed in today from the surf by Joe Marra of Seaside Park. He caught it on 20th avenue on a KASTMASTER. Another stellar report comes from Keith Chinery of Whiting, NJ. He and his 2 fishing buddies bought gulp worms here in the morning, went down to the island, and caught 18 kingfish and 15 spots.

American Traffic Solutions, vendor for New Jersey’s red light camera systems issued a video and statement today in defense of its red light cameras after the State of New Jersey ordered 21 of the 25 towns they have been installed to stop issuing tickets until they can be checked for proper calibration. At issue is the duration of the yellow lights which did not meet the minimum time requirements. The state said only 22 of the 85 pilot intersections met those requirements.

“Red-light safety cameras in New Jersey are all about safety and are a big success is the message delivered by law enforcement officials and municipal leaders in a new video released by American Traffic Solutions (ATS), the vendor for 18 of the 25 municipalities in the state that are part of the red-light camera pilot program launched by a state law signed in 2008.” ATS said in a statement tonight.

The company also released a video, which can be viewed here, featuring interviews with law enforcement officials from Brick Township, Glassboro Borough, the city of Linden and Union Township, four of the municipalities where ATS operates red-light safety cameras. The video also features comments from Mayor Stephen Acropolis of Brick Township.

The individuals in this video deal with dangerous intersections in their towns and municipalities every day. Their testimonials highlight their steadfast support for their programs and emphasize the impact the cameras have made in their towns.

As part of the video, Captain John Rein of Brick Township describes the process of how law enforcement officers examine each and every violation. “”By statute, the officers have to review every violation that comes through the events that are captured by the camera. The officers have to look at every violation. They have to look at the photos, match the license plate and match the vehicle and make sure everything is in order with that and also look at the 12 seconds of video. Pictures alone will not tell you if it’s a violation. You can see in the video if a person may have made an attempt to stop and didn’t actually complete the violation. It is a check and balance.”, the Brick Township captain said.

The company said law enforcement and public officials in New Jersey that are experiencing the benefits of the red-light safety cameras know too well the dangers associated with red-light running. Anyone who questions their impact or chalks up their placement at intersections as nothing but a revenue-generator for municipalities should take note of Sergeant Michael Babulski’s interview where Babulski states “It is difficult to get a phone call at 3 a.m. in the morning and respond to the scene of an accident when I know when I get the call that there is going to be someone seriously injured or dead at the scene. To have to go and inform a family of the loss of a loved one is extremely difficult, and I have had to do that a lot less since the red-light cameras have come online.”

On Friday night, Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg closed out the opening night at the 2012 Atlantic City Beer Festival with a one hour performance of classic Ramones hits. The band, the incarnation of Rock’n'Roll Hall of Fame drummer, Marky Ramone is in the midst of a four month world tour. Ramone said he formed the band to keep the spirit and the music of the Ramones alive for a new generation and chose Toms River resident, and former Misfit’s front man Michale Graves to carry on the vocals for the late Joey Ramone.

Graves and the Blitzkrieg rocked the auditorium with a full hour of classics, injected with some of Graves’ songs he wrote while a member of the legendary New Jersey punk band, The Misfits.

Old and young alike in the audience came together to enjoy the band’s last stop in New Jersey before heading to Greece to kick off the European leg of their tour. The band also plays in Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Philippines, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Germany and the UK. Their last U.S. performance of the tour is Sunday night at the Bell House in Brooklyn.

Marky said that he started Blitzkrieg while on tour with his previous band, Marky Ramone and the Intruders and fans would chant “Hey! Ho! Let’s Go” and would not give up until they pulled out a classic from the archives. According to Marky, he feels he’s keeping the legacy of the Ramones alive and says that after decades of playing the hits, he still enjoys playing the songs and entertaining fans. Marky says he’s doing what he feels the three deceased members of the band, singer Joey, bassist Dee Dee and guitarist Johnny would want, which is keeping the music alive.

On Graves, in a recent interview Ramone said he made the right choice with Graves. “He’s my singer now. He was an integral part of the Misfits and we enjoy each other’s company. He’s a really great front man.”
